Explore North America by river, Great Lakes expedition ship, and luxury rail—without crossing an ocean.
![]() YP journeysVolume 3 • Issue 9.1 DISCOVERY EDITION Welcome!International travel will always hold a special appeal, but memorable exploration does not require crossing an ocean. North America offers journeys that combine dramatic scenery, rich history, and meaningful access to regions that can be difficult to experience as fully by car. We have recently explored three very different examples: a river voyage through the Pacific Northwest, an expedition cruise across the Great Lakes, and a luxury rail journey through the Canadian Rockies. Each offered a distinct way to understand a region—not simply by visiting individual attractions, but by connecting them into one unfolding experience. As always, your feedback is welcome at [email protected] or through www.ypjourneys.com. ![]() FEATURED JOURNEYThe Snake and Columbia Rivers Our recent American Cruise Lines voyage aboard American Song traveled from Clarkston, Washington—across the Snake River from Lewiston, Idaho—to Portland, Oregon. The itinerary followed waterways closely connected to the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the development of the Pacific Northwest. The exploration began before embarkation. A jet-boat adventure into Hells Canyon carried us through the dramatic Snake River landscape; travelers could instead choose a helicopter excursion above the canyon. Both options demonstrated how a well-planned pre-cruise experience can establish the geographical and historical context before the ship leaves the dock. ![]() As we traveled west, the landscape changed from the dry, open country of eastern Washington to the green Columbia River Gorge. Excursions added active, historical, and scenic perspectives—from e-biking near Mount Hood and seeing the lasting effects of Mount St. Helens to visiting Multnomah Falls and looking across the river toward the Pacific from the Astoria Column. ![]() ![]() The value of this river cruise was the access it provided to the region. The river connected its landscapes, engineering, communities, and history into a coherent story. That broader experience—not any single port or onboard amenity—is what made the itinerary worth considering. MORE WAYS TO EXPLORENorth America by Expedition Ship and Luxury Rail The Great Lakes aboard Viking OctantisOur voyage aboard Viking Octantis from Thunder Bay to Milwaukee offered a very different experience. The purpose-built expedition ship approached the Great Lakes through exploration, education, and science, supported by expert lecturers, an expedition team, and specialized equipment. ![]() Experienced from the water, the Great Lakes reveal their immense scale and layered stories of geology, Indigenous cultures, maritime commerce, shipwrecks, industry, and diverse ecosystems. Here, the ship was not simply transportation between ports; it was part of the educational experience. Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian RockiesRocky Mountaineer’s First Passage to the West added a third approach to exploring closer to home. Traveling from Vancouver through Kamloops and onward to Lake Louise, Banff, and Calgary, the train became a moving panoramic tour of rivers, forests, waterfalls, and mountain passes.
Glass-dome windows, attentive hosts, excellent meals and beverages, and a relaxed pace allowed us to experience the Canadian Rockies without the demands of driving or coordinating daily logistics. For travelers seeking a similar rail experience within the United States, sister brand Canyon Spirit offers its Rockies to the Red Rocks journey through the American Southwest. In either setting, getting there becomes an essential part of the destination. CHOOSE THE EXPERIENCE THAT FITSThese journeys are not interchangeable. A river cruise can connect historic communities and landscapes; an expedition ship can add scientific and educational depth; and luxury rail can make the passage itself the central experience. Together, they show how much variety exists within North America—and how the right travel style can reveal a familiar region in an unfamiliar way. YURI'S TRAVEL INSIGHTKeep Track of Your Luggage
Apple AirTags and similar devices connected to the Find My ecosystem can show a bag’s approximate location through a smartphone. We place trackers in checked luggage—and often in important carry-on bags as well. A tracker does not replace an airline’s baggage-tracking system, and its location may not update continuously. Still, knowing whether a suitcase remains at the departure airport, has reached a connecting city, or is near baggage claim can make conversations with airline representatives more productive. Before traveling, confirm that each tracker works, replace weak batteries, and make sure the app is accessible on your phone.
